USS Gato SS-212, a lead boat of a distinguish class   USS Gato (SS-212), Gato class submarine, was laid down at Electric Boat Co., Groton, CT, on October 5, 1940; launched, August 21, 1941 and commissioned on December 31, 1941.   The lead boat of a very distinguished class of submarines, Gato received the Presidential Unit Citation and 13 battle stars for service in World War II.   Decommissioned, March 16, 1946, at New York Naval Shipyard; struck from the Naval Register, March 1st, 1960.   Back to History Index Image Country Year Description Marshall Is. 2000 USS Gato, SS-212, 1941
