The first Spanish Navy`s submarine was named after the famous Spanish submarine inventor,
Narciso Monturiol. The boat was laid down on September 28, 1915, at Fiat-San Giorgio, la Specia, Italy, launched, April 16, 1917; and commissioned, August 25, 1917.

Construction
Only 3 boats were built in this class, A-1 Narciso Monturiol, A-2 C. Gracia, and A-3, by Fiat-San Giorgio, la Specia, Italy, all launched in 1917, and commissioned on the same day August 25, 1917.
